Drunk driving causes a fatal car accident in Arlington, Texas

The road can be a safe place, in the presence of responsible drivers. Drivers in Dallas, Texas, know that it is their duty to follow traffic laws and other safety precautions to prevent motor vehicle accidents that often result in serious injuries and fatalities. Sadly, not all drivers comply with both local and state traffic laws, putting their lives at risk and compromising the safety of others. Drunk driving can lead to criminal and civil liabilities, if an intoxicated or drunk driver is involved in a collision.

A recent three-vehicle collision in Arlington, Texas, highlighted the dangers of drunk driving. Based on a report, a 23-year-old woman rear-ended a tanker truck before she struck a sports utility vehicle, killing the 57-year-old SUV driver and injuring three other people inside. The driver of the truck was unharmed in the crash.

Following the deadly crash, the 23-year-old woman was apprehended at the hospital where she was being treated. She was charged with intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter.

Any types of traffic accidents are governed by tort law, which determines each party's negligence or contributions to the collision. The fact that the accident resulted from drunk driving increases the probability that only one party caused the collision. Such accidents can be prevented, if the suspected drunk driver had chosen not to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. In similar accidents, the victim and their families may be entitled to damages, if there is a strong possibility that the accident was caused by a negligent party, the suspected drunk driver.

By filing a legal claim, the car accident victim may receive compensation covered by the negligent party's insurance. The victim may also demand higher compensation, depending on the extent of the injuries sustained and the amount of losses incurred as a result of the accident.
