How to avoid a collision with a large truck

Motorists travelling on major roads and highways in Dallas often find themselves driving next to large trucks, such as tractor trailers and 18-wheelers. In a car accident the sheer size of these vehicles can deal huge amounts of damage to smaller vehicles. Some of our readers may have experienced such a collision between two or more cars and seen the destruction. However, car accidents are often minor compared to collisions involving trucks. Texas residents, especially those who operate their vehicles on a regular basis, should learn the basics of driving next to a truck. Having knowledge can help motorists navigate safely and avoid truck accidents.

First, it is important to understand the term "blind spots," and to avoid areas where truck drivers cannot see other vehicles. As a general rule, drivers should check the truck driver's side mirrors. If drivers cannot see these mirrors, it is likely that they are driving in the truck driver's blind spot. Second, drivers should learn more about safe passing. When passing a truck it is important to always pass on the truck's left side. This is effective as long as drivers make sure that there is enough distance between their vehicles and the truck.

The same thing applies to safely following a vehicle. It is important for drivers to avoid driving too close to a truck. Following too closely can increase the chances of truck drivers finding it difficult to determine if someone is following them or travelling next to them.

If motorists find themselves involved in a truck accident after following these safety tips, it could be the result of the truck driver acted reckless or negligently. In such cases, the victim may have a legal claim and could seek compensation from the driver-at-fault.
