Now that spring is afoot, more motorcycles will be out on the roadways which is why it is important for both motorcycle riders and drivers of passenger vehicles to understand the potential dangers motorcyclists face. In two-thirds of motorcycle accidents involving a passenger vehicle or other vehicle, the other vehicle violated the motorcycle rider's right of way and caused the motorcycle accident.
In addition, motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die in an auto accident and 5 times more likely to be injured in an auto accident than an individual riding in a passenger vehicle. During 2007, 5,154 motorcyclists were killed in motorcycle accidents. The total number of motorcyclists killed in 2007 increased by 7 percent from 4,837 motorcyclists killed in 2006. During 2007, 103,000 motorcyclists suffered injuries in motorcycle accidents. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, in 2007 375 motorcyclists were killed in Texas. Throughout 2007, motorcyclists accounted for 13 percent of all traffic fatalities.
Families of victims killed in motorcycle accidents, and victims of motorcycle accidents, may face significant challenges following a motorcycle accident. Because of the vulnerable nature of motorcyclists on the roadways, motorcycle accident victims may suffer extensive physical, financial and emotional harm which may interfere with their ability to work or lead a normal life. In addition, family members who have lost a loved one in a motorcycle accident may encounter financial and emotional challenges following a motorcycle accident and significant disruption to their lives as well.
Because of the serious nature of motorcycle accidents and the damages victims may suffer, legal protections provide resources, options and remedies. Remedies may be available to assist victims families with the physical, financial and pain and suffering damages that follow a motorcycle accident.
